Odd and Even Number Exploration with Addition Charts

This worksheet has been created by a teacher to help students understand the concept of odd and even numbers through hands-on exploration of an addition chart. Exploring odd and even number patterns in addition charts can be a highly beneficial and engaging activity for children. It strengthens their mathematical skills and fosters critical thinking and a deeper understanding of number relationships.

In this worksheet, students are asked to complete the addition table and then color the odd numbers red and the even numbers blue. Finally, they are asked to observe the table and write down three patterns they see. Some patterns that students may observe include:

  • Odd and even numbers alternate.
  • An even plus an odd number is always odd.
  • An odd number plus an odd number is an even number.
  • An even number plus an even number is an even number.

How to Extend this Odd and Even Addition Activity

For students who grasp the concept quickly, consider the following extensions:

  • Challenge them to create their own addition chart with different maximum numbers and analyze the distribution of odd and even numbers.
  • Introduce larger addition charts beyond 100 to explore more complex odd and even numbers.
