Help students instantly recognize numbers 1-6 with this multiplayer Valentine’s Day board game. 

❤️ Subitizing For Number Recognition

Print the game board and rolling cube on red or pink cardstock and use it in the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day.

Students play the game in pairs. Each student gets a Cover Up! game board and a set of counters to play with. Students take turns rolling the heart die, saying the number rolled and covering one of the matching numbers on their game board. The student to cover all of their numbers first wins!

By completing this activity, students demonstrate an ability to subitize numbers 1-6.  

Scaffolding + Extension Tips 

In addition to individual student work time, use this number recognition game as a:

Students who need a challenge can play each other using the same game board. The first student to call out the product gets to cover a matching number with their manipulative. The student who covers the most hearts at the end of the game wins! 

To review numbers in your math lesson, project the game board and use our Dice Roller widget in your guided math group. 

To Prepare This Resource

Please note that this activity will download as a black and white PDF. Print the game board and cube on red or pink cardstock to make it a Valentine’s Day-themed math activity. 

Provide students with manipulatives or bingo tokens to keep track of their progress. Or slip game boards into dry-erase sleeves for students to color their matching products with dry-erase markers, then erase and reuse.
