Teach your students about story elements with this double-sided flipbook.

What Are Story Elements?

We’re glad you asked! Story elements are the essential components that can be found in most narrative texts. Characters, setting, plot, mood and theme are all story elements.

This hands-on flipbook has been designed to help your students understand the concept of story elements using a text they are familiar with. The students are required to identify each element in a book they have read, then record them in the flipbook. The best thing is, the flipbook also contains a definition of each element to remind and guide students as they complete the task!

In completing this activity, students will learn more about the following story elements:

  • Characters
  • Setting
  • Problem and Solution
  • Beginning
  • Middle
  • End

How to Create This Story Elements Flipbook

This resource is intended to be printed double-sided. Please follow the instructions below to ensure that the resource prints correctly for your students!

  1. To print double-sided, make sure to check “flip on the long edge” on your printer.  Print each student a copy of all pages and create a packet.
  2. Cut out the flipbook pages on the dashed lines.
  3. Stack the pages in order, beginning with the largest on the bottom, and ending with the smallest on top.
  4. Align all pages along the top edge.
  5. Staple the book together at marked staple points.
  6. Have students draw and write about the story elements based on the prompt given on each page.
