Spot the Dots Subitizing 1–10 Activity

Teach Starter Publishing
PDF | 8 pages | Grades: PK - 1

A set of 1-10 subitizing cards that can be used in a variety of ways.

Use this teaching resource to encourage students to subitize arrangements from 1–10. It can also be used to help students practice addition and subtraction strategies such as counting on, counting back, or making 10.

Print out the cards on carstock to ensure durability, then cut them out. You will have 3 sets of cards – a set of fish cards, a set of frog cards, and a set of number cards.

Ways to use this resource to practice subitizing:

  • Students choose a set of animal cards to play with. They choose a dot card and place the matching number card on top. For younger students, allow them to count the objects to reinforce one-to-one correspondence.
  • Play a game of Memory using one set of animal cards and the number cards. For some students, you may wish to play with only the numbers 1–5.

Ways to use this resource to practice addition and subtraction fact strategies:

  • Students play this game in pairs. They split the number cards and place the two sets of animal cards facedown in a grid formation. Player 1 flips over two cards, identifies the number on each card, and either adds or subtracts the numbers. If they can make the answer using their number cards, they win the two animal cards, e.g. if they flip over a 9 and a 7 and they have the digits 1 and 6 to make 16, they win the 9 and 7 cards.  Play continues back and forth. Students keep their number cards each time in order to play throughout the game. The student with the most animal cards in the end, wins!
  • Students use one set of animal cards and the number cards for this activity. They flip over an animal card, say the number, and determine how many more dots to make 10. They will place that number card on top of the animal card, e.g. if they flip over an animal card with 6 dots they will place the number card 4 on top because 6 + 4 = 10. Some students may need the assistance of a ten-frame and colored counters for this activity.

These are great to use as math center activities!

Use the drop-down menu to choose between the color or black and white version.
