Let’s Learn How to Summarize a Fiction Text!

This student mini-book has been created by a teacher to help guide students through the process of summarizing a fiction text. This mini-book includes the SWBST strategy for remembering what to include in a summary of a story.

  • S – Somebody
  • W – Wanted
  • B – But
  • S – So
  • T – Then

Included in this mini-book are some activities using the above strategy to help students practise their summarizing of a story. It is important that students understand the difference between how to summarize a story and how to retell a story.

Learning to Summarize Helps Students with Comprehension

Learning to summarize is a transformative skill that acts as a linchpin in enhancing students’ overall comprehension abilities. Here’s how the art of summarization contributes to and amplifies their understanding of diverse texts:

  • Summarizing requires students to distil essential elements of a text, enabling them to extract the most crucial information.
  • Summarizing requires students to engage with the material at a deeper level.
  • Summarizing is a cognitive exercise that nurtures critical thinking skills.
  • Summarizing reinforces memory retention.
