Explore Food Webs Through Inquiry Learning

Show your students how their science knowledge can be applied to the real world with an open-ended science research project! Inquiry-based learning provides wonderful opportunities for differentiation, enabling students to feel confident and successful as they engage with tasks at their own individual level.

Through this student-driven inquiry task, your learners will:

  1. Research a food web in a specific biome.
  2. Describe the flow of energy through the food web.
  3. Predict how changes in the ecosystem affect the food web.

How to Complete This Food Web Project

Students will be guided through this research project by completing each of the steps below.

  1. Choose a biome to research.
  2. Research the chosen biome, as well as the animals and plants that make up the food web in that biome.
  3. Research and explain how energy flows from producers to consumers to decomposers through the food web.
  4. Make predictions on how changes in the ecosystem may affect the balance of the food web.
  5. Write a reflection on the success of the project.
  6. List all sources used in the project.
