Adverbs — The Name of the Game!

Use this entertaining and engaging classroom game to help students understand how adding adverbs to their sentences makes their writing more interesting!

Included in this resource download are:

  • One set of teacher instructions,
  • 28 adverb word cards with pictures, and
  • 20 sentence cards.

This adverbs game would make a fantastic guided group activity or a whole-class learning experience.

How to Use this Adverbs Game in the Classroom

First, print, cut and (if desired) laminate all adverb cards. Give each student in your class one adverb card.

Display the sentence with missing adverb for whole class to see, either physically or on your screen.

Students who think their adverb fits into their sentece stand up with their card.

Students take turns reading the sentence with their adverb, and the class decides whether it does, indeed, fit!

Differentiation Tips for this Resource

For students who need an extra challenge, make a “think-quick” game. Seat students in a circle. As each sentence card is complete, students pass their word card on to the person next to them and recieves a new one.

To support struggling students, read all sentences aloud. Pause where the missing word belongs. Allow students time to place their adverb into the sentence. Ask students to display their card and read the sentence with the missing adverb for them.
