2 mins | Grades: 1 - 5

Teach kids how to draw a witch with a simple directed drawing video perfect for your Halloween lesson planning!

Teach Your Class How to Draw a Witch

Do you need a magical lesson for the weeks around Halloween? The teachers on our teacher team pulled out our cauldrons, threw in some eye of newt and toe of frog and cooked up this fun directed drawing video just for you.

Running just over a minute and a half long, the simple video will walk your students through the simple steps they’ll need to take to learn how to draw a witch, including not just the witch herself but also how to draw the witch’s hat and her broom!

All you will need to supply students with is paper, pencils and erasers — although you may also want to provide materials to color in their witches after their drawings are complete, adding some creative flourishes.

Note: This video does not include sound, so you can alter the instructions to meet the needs of your class!

How to Get the Most Out of Your Witchy Video

Looking for some tips to incorporate this bit of Halloween-themed learning into your lesson plans? Here are some tips from our teacher team:

  1. Introduce the concept of witches, and ask students to share what they have seen or heard about witches.
  2. Show the directed drawing video, pausing and replaying as needed, to make sure students can follow along.
  3. Carefully guide your class through each step of the drawing process, emphasizing the importance of paying attention and using simple shapes and lines.
  4. After they have completed their basic witch drawings, allow students to add their own creative touches and personalize their witches with colored pencils or crayons.

After they’ve drawn their witches, here are some extension activities you can add to your lesson plan!

  1. Ask students to write a short story or poem about their witch drawing.
  2. Have students decorate their witches by adding Halloween-themed backgrounds or props.
  3. Create a class bulletin board outside your room that showcases all the witch drawings so other grades can view and appreciate the students’ artwork.
