Google Slide, PDF | 1 page | Grades: K - 2

Identify the major landforms of the world with a matching activity.

Build Academic Vocabulary with a Landform Lesson

Identifying landforms is an essential educational concept that every student should practice. Looking at maps and watching slideshows is great, but young learners need to get their hands on materials to really internalize the content.  This landform matching activity was designed to help students practice identifying the different types of natural landforms on Earth using images and verbal descriptions.  Your Social Studies and geography lessons are sure to be engaging when using this fun vocabulary game.

The significant landforms referenced in this activity are

  • mountain
  • peninsula
  • river
  • plain
  • plateau
  • canyon
  • island
  • valley
  • lake
  • sea

To use, students will lay out the cards and try to match the descriptions to the pictures.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:

To provide an extra challenge,

  • Have students play the game as a Concentration game in which all cards are face down. They will then match the cards and descriptions, while paying close attention to their location.
  • Provide opportunities for students to draw, write, and discuss the different landforms around the world.
  • Assist struggling students with the tasks by providing notes, anchor charts, or individual assistance as needed.
