It’s Groundhog Day!!⏰ Time to Craft!

What’s the deal with Groundhog Day? Why do we celebrate a groundhog being rudely awakened by people just to see him run back to bed? There’s a story behind the Groundhog Day tradition, and we’ve got the scoop!

Groundhog Day is a holiday celebrated on February 2nd in the United States and Canada. It is based on the idea that if a groundhog (a type of rodent) emerges from its burrow on this day and sees its shadow, it will retreat into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks. If the groundhog does not see its shadow, it is believed to be a sign of an early spring. The holiday has roots in ancient European weather lore, which has been celebrated in the United States since the late 19th century.

Craft and Write About the Groundhog’s Predictions

Use this template to have your students write about what they think the groundhog’s prediction will be when he comes out this year. Once they finish, they can assemble an adorable little groundhog to hang onto their writing until the actual prediction happens.

This activity is perfect for putting together your Groundhog Day bulletin board or a February hallway display.
