What Is Morphology?
Haven't taught this section of ELA in a while, or maybe this is your first time? Our teacher team has put together a quick refresher to get you ready to dive in! (If you're all set, feel free to skip ahead to download the morphology resources you need most right now!)
Morphology studies words, how they're formed, and how they are related to other words in the English language. The study of morphology includes looking at word parts such as:
- word stems
- root words
- prefixes
- suffixes
- word origins
Why Is Morphology Important?
Understanding morphology boosts spelling strategies in elementary school grades. For example, knowing that biology, antibiotics, and biography all share a common root allows learners to apply knowledge of one spelling to multiple words.
Take a walk through our morphology collection and find a plethora of resources for teaching root word groups, prefixes and suffixes, inflectional endings, and more!
