What Does Perseverance Mean?

Teaching perseverance is more critical now than ever before. In an ever-changing world, students need the mental strength to overcome obstacles and setbacks, making perseverance a key life skill. The ability to persevere not only impacts academic success but also prepares students for personal growth and resilience in the face of adversity. By understanding and applying perseverance strategies, students can develop the determination, grit and resilience they need to climb their own mountains of challenges.

Speaking of climbing… Teach Starter has created a beautiful set of rock climbing-themed posters for your classroom bulletin board to teach your students the definition of perseverance. It has been designed by our expert team to inspire and empower your students to keep persevering with whatever personal challenges they have set for themselves. 

The resource contains a display banner and eight posters containing the following perseverance strategies to keep your students motivated as they strive toward their goals:

• I have a clear understanding of what I am trying to accomplish.
• I believe in my ability to achieve my goal and can visualise what success will look like.
• I have an organised plan that includes what I need to do and how often I need to do it.
• I use positive self-talk to keep myself motivated and to keep my confidence high.
• I see mistakes as an opportunity for learning, not as a sign of weakness or failure.
• I call on my support team for assistance and encouragement when I need it.
• I adapt to setbacks and challenges by staying calm and trying new approaches.
• I acknowledge my efforts and take pride in my achievements.

To create this resource, download the display banner and the posters (which have been uploaded separately due to their page orientation). To create the banner, print the three pages then paste them together. Display on your classroom bulletin board as a constant reminder of what it means to persevere! 

Both full-colour and black-and-white versions of this resource have been provided. If you have limited access to colour printing, we recommend printing the black-and-white version on coloured paper.

Understanding the Definition of Perseverance Matters!

Perseverance is a fundamental skill that every student needs to succeed in the classroom and in life. This classroom display provides an engaging and visually appealing way to teach and reinforce this vital skill. It can be used in your classroom in the following ways:

1. Goal Setting – Use ‘The Pillars of Perseverance’ to facilitate goal-setting sessions. Help students define their aspirations and create a plan to reach them, emphasising the importance of persistence and resilience along the way.
