Looking for a Text With Homophones Examples?

Homophones are some of the trickiest words for our students to spell correctly. Unfortunately, there’s no magic formula when it comes to knowing which way to spell these words based on their meaning. One of the best ways we can set our students up for success when it comes to homophones is to expose them to these words in the context of real texts.

This set of three differentiated worksheets has been designed by our experienced teacher team for this very purpose! The resource download contains three reading passages: The Mystery Door, The Storm and Bake Off! Each text contains 20 homophone examples that have been spelled incorrectly. The students must write these words with the correct spelling in the table at the bottom of the worksheet.

To make it easier for you to differentiate according to the ability levels of your students, we’ve provided two levelled versions of each worksheet.

The easier versions (which can be identified by a single star in the top right-hand corner of the worksheet) have the 20 homophone examples written in bold text within the passage. This means that less-capable students do not need to worry about finding the homophones within the passage and can focus solely on spelling them correctly.

The harder versions (which can be identified by two stars in the top right-hand corner of the worksheet) do not give any indication which words are the homophones requiring correction. The students must use their own knowledge to identify all 20 of these, then spell them correctly in the table.

Answers are also provided in the download.

This resource downloads as a black-and-white PDF or an editable Google Slides version. The Google Slides version comes in handy should you wish your students to complete this resource electronically (just be sure to remove the answer pages first).

This resource makes a great addition to your vocabulary lessons on homophones. It can be used as a whole-class activity (via smartboard), an individual task or a homework assignment.

Further Extend This Homophones Activity

Are you looking for a way to further challenge your students when it comes to using homophones in context? Here’s one suggestion from our teacher team:

Have your more-capable students write their own homophones story in the style of the passages in the resource. You could provide them with a list of homophones to include, or they could come up with a list of their own. Once they have finished, have them swap their story with a partner to see if they can a) find all the incorrectly spelled homophones and b) spell them correctly!

If you’re looking for a list of homophones to inspire your students in this task, our Homophones Word Study List is the perfect resource to do so!
