What is a ‘Write the Room’ Literacy Centre?

A “write the room” literacy centre is a reading or writing activity commonly used in early years classrooms to enhance literacy skills. In this activity, various words, letters, or vocabulary cards are strategically placed around the classroom, typically on walls, shelves, or other surfaces. Each card contains a word or a picture representing a word related to the current lesson or theme.

After being handed a recording sheet and a clipboard, students are expected to move around the classroom to search for cards and jot down the words they find on their recording sheet. This activity promotes physical activity and active participation, which can help students stay focused and interested in the material being taught.
