Colourful Fractions: Spin Your Way to Unit Fraction Mastery

Welcome to our engaging spin and colour activity designed to make learning unit fractions a blast for you and your students! In this activity, students will embark on a colourful journey through the world of fractions as they spin, read and colour various unit fractions. With just a spin of the wheel, students will discover exciting fraction challenges and opportunities to express their creativity through colouring.

From halves and thirds to fifths and beyond, this activity covers a wide range of unit fractions, making it perfect for learners at different stages of their mathematical journey.

How to Use this Unit Fraction Activity in the Classroom

  1. Gather the materials needed for the activity. You will need pencils and paper clips to create the spinners. Make sure each student has access to these materials.
  2. Create Spinners – Invite students to create their spinners by attaching a paper clip to the end of a pencil. They can place the paper clip in the middle of the pencil’s eraser and secure it with tape or simply hold it in place.
  3. Set Up the Activity Distribute the spinners and activity sheets to each student. Explain the instructions for the activity, emphasising that they will be reading and colouring unit fractions based on where the spinner lands.
  4. Spin the Spinner Encourage students to spin their spinners. As the spinner comes to a stop, they should take note of which unit fraction it lands on.
  5. Read and Colour – Based on the unit fraction indicated by the spinner, students will locate the corresponding fraction on their activity sheets. They will then proceed to colour that fraction according to the provided instructions.
  6. Repeat and Explore – Students can continue spinning the spinner and colouring different unit fractions on their activity sheets. Encourage them to explore a variety of fractions and experiment with different colours to make their activity sheets vibrant and engaging.
  7. Discuss and Reflect After completing the activity, engage students in a discussion about their experience. Encourage them to share which fractions they found easy or challenging to color and why. This discussion can help reinforce their understanding of unit fractions and provide valuable insights into their learning process.
