Teaching Australia’s Three Levels of Government? We Have You Sorted!

Each level of government in Australia (local, state and federal) has a specific role and provides specific services to members of the Australian public. From printing money to waste disposal, certain public services are handled at specific levels of government. Ideally, this separation ensures communities get what they need to run efficiently, effectively and with flexibility!

This sorting activity has been designed to familiarise your students with the distinct responsibilities of local, state and federal governments in Australia. It contains:

  • 1 x  instruction page
  • 3 x sort headings (local, state, federal)
  • 24 x task cards
  • 1 x recording sheet
  • 1 x answer sheet

How to Use This Government Sorting Activity

Using this resource in your classroom is easy! Just follow the simple instructions below.

  1. Place the sort headings out on a flat surface.
  2. Choose one card to read. Determine which level of government is responsible for that service.
  3. Place that card under the correct heading and record the answer on the recording sheet.
  4. Repeat until all cards have been distributed.
