Phases of the Moon Worksheet

This printable worksheet is the perfect way to engage your year 2 students in learning about the phases of the moon. Designed for easy use in the classroom or at home, this printable worksheet is both informative and fun.

The worksheet includes a clear diagram of the moon’s phases as they appear in the southern hemisphere. Students will be able to identify and label each phase of the moon, including the new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter and waning crescent.

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:

  • Lesson warm-up
  • Lesson wrap-up
  • Fast finishers
  • Homework assignment
  • Whole-class review (via smartboard)

If there are students who need an additional challenge, encourage them to think if the moon phases are different in the oppositive hemisphere. Challenge them to draw what they think the moon phases look like from this location.

For students who need assistance with the worksheet, encourage them to reference a poster or anchor chart that highlights the phases of the moon.
