Help your students master their understanding of multiplication arrays with this set of 20 task cards.

What Is An Array In Maths?

The array method is another way of solving multiplication equations. By breaking the multipliers into equivalent amounts using symbols and arranging them in rows and columns, we can more easily visualise their product

For example, to represent the multiplication equation 4 × 2 = 8, your array would look like this:

🔺🔺

🔺🔺

🔺🔺

🔺🔺

Four rows with 2 triangles in each row or 4 groups (rows) of 2.

Practise Multiplication With Arrays

Through this activity, students will show they can represent multiplication facts using the arrays method.

To play, students will count the rows and columns for each array and determine the corresponding multiplication fact. They will then write the multiplication fact and solve for its product on their recording sheet.

Students can hold themselves accountable during center time by checking their recording sheets against the included answer key once all spaces are filled in.

Scaffolding + Extension Tips

Support students who need help understanding the concepts by showing students how to keep track of the multipliers. Slip their worksheet into a dry erase sleeve and provide an erasable marker for students to circle the rows and columns as they count.

Students can also refer to an anchor chart or multiplication facts poster for guidance.

Challenge fast finishers who already understand the concept to use manipulatives to recreate the arrays and practise the commutative property by swapping the rows and columns.

More Ways To Show Multiplication Using Arrays

We created this resource for your maths center as an independent practise activity. We also suggest using it to reinforce your small group and full-class lessons in the following ways:

🖼️ Gallery Walk (Scoot Activity)

Hang all task cards around the room to have your students complete a gallery walk. Working either alone or in pairs, assign a task card to each student and have them write their answers on the recording sheet. When you say, ‘Scoot,’ students will rotate through the cards until they have completed each one.

🔔 Bell Ringer Activity

Project a selection of array cards for your students to see as soon as they enter the classroom. On a piece of paper or mini whiteboard, have students write the multiplication array presented and solve for the product. Discuss the solution and process during your maths lesson as a quick recap.

🛑 Exit Activity

After your lesson, pass out cards to students as a maths problem they will answer independently. Provide them with their own sticky note so that they can turn in their answer as a formative assessment, making sure to write their name on the sticky note.

Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students

Print on thick card for added durability and longevity. Place all pieces in a folder or large envelope for easy access.

To keep the task cards out of pockets or under desks, punch a hole in the corner of each to place them on a binder ring.

Sustainability Tip: Print a few recording sheets on thick card and slip them into dry-erase sleeves. Students can record their answers with a dry-erase marker and then erase and reuse them.

Because this activity includes an answer sheet, we recommend first printing one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.
