Allow your students time to explore double digit place value with this engaging mystery worksheet. Students are provided with clues that they must try and find the answer on the sheet. Here are some of the clues:

  • A number with 8 tens and 8 ones
  • A number between 50 and 60.
  • The expanded form is 20+5.
  • A number with 9 ones.
  • A number less than 20.

The clues provide students with various ways to show their knowledge of the place value of double digit numbers.

Different Ways to Use This Resource in the Classroom

This resource might just look like a worksheet – and it certainly can be used in this way, but by getting creative, you can use this worksheet in several different ways during your place value maths lessons. Here are some suggestions:

  • Use the clues for daily maths warm-up questions as a whole class.
  • Send home homework for students to practise this and show their family members what they know.
  • Cut out the clues and the answers and hide them around the room; students must find a clue and the matching number. 
  • Use as exit ticket questions for students to monitor their progress in understanding double digit numbers.
