Give and Follow Directions Using Right Angles 

In their simplest form, angles are merely measures of turn. Turns can be very useful when it comes to giving and following directions.

This 2-page right angles worksheet has been designed by our experienced team of teachers to help your students practise giving and following directions using right angles as measures of a turn. 

• Worksheet 1: Students start at the location of the bee. They then follow the directions provided on the worksheet to create and colour a path that leads to the correct beehive. Example directions include:
  • Move forward 3 spaces.
  • Make a right-angle turn clockwise.
  • Make a three-quarter turn anticlockwise. 
• Worksheet 2: Students choose one of the dog bones on the grid. They are then required to write a set of directions, starting at the location of the dog and ending at the bone they have chosen. Once they have finished their directions, students swap with a partner and read their directions to each other. Once finished, they can check that they have arrived at the correct location.

An answer sheet is also provided in the download.

This resource comes as an easy-print black-and-white PDF, or alternatively, an editable Google Slides version of this resource is also available. 

This student-centred activity provides a great opportunity for students to collaborate with each other as they learn more about giving and following directions with right angles.

Once your students have a sound understanding of giving and following directions using right angles, you’ll want them to put this learning into practice! Here is an activity you might like to try to help your students translate the skills they have learned into a real-world setting.

Playground Scavenger Hunt

Have your students hide an object in the playground. Using their knowledge of writing directions using right angles, have your students create a set of directions to guide a partner to the hidden object. Once the students have finished writing their instructions, take the class outside to see whether all the booty can be reclaimed!
