Practising Vowel Diphthongs

An experienced teacher created this set of diphthong worksheets to help students practise their knowledge of vowel diphthongs. Vowel diphthongs are essential to phonetics, and understanding them is crucial for effective communication in any language. A diphthong is a complex vowel sound that begins with one vowel sound and glides into another within the same syllable. In this set of worksheets, students need to look at a collection of images and say the word. Then, they will need to colour the pictures that have a particular diphthong and write them on lines.

How to Use this Worksheets in the Classroom

Using worksheets such as these to help students identify different vowel diphthongs through images and colour-coding can be an engaging and effective way to reinforce their understanding of phonetics. Here’s a suggested step-by-step diphthong lesson plan where these worksheets can be utilised:

1. Depending on the phonics programs used in your school, you may like to focus on one diphthong, or you may like to use two dipthongs that make the same sound, such as oi and oy.
2. Introduce the diphthong that you will be focusing on and use the slides that focus on that particular diphthong in this set of Diphthong Teaching Slides.
3. Add the diphthongs to your Diphthong Sound Wall with mouth articulation images to help students visually.
4. Before distributing the worksheets, model the activity to the students. Choose a few examples from the worksheet and demonstrate how to identify the diphthongs in each word.
5. Hand out the worksheets to each student. Make sure they have colouring material, such as coloured pencils, ready to go.
6. Foster a collaborative environment by allowing students to work in pairs or small groups.
7. Circulate the classroom to provide assistance and guidance as needed.
8. Gather the students to review their answers as a class.
