Exploring Long and Short Vowel Sounds with a Wintery Worksheet!

Use this printable worksheet during your phonics lessons when exploring long and short vowel sounds.

This phonics worksheet contains four separate colour-by-vowel sound activities. Students are required to:

  • read each word
  • identify whether the vowel sound in the word is long or short
  • colour in the word according to the key.

An answer sheet is provided should you wish to correct the worksheet as a class, or for students to self-correct their work.

Scaffolding and Extension Tips

Have fast finishers create their own colour-by-vowel sounds challenge for a partner to complete. Something as simple as a flower would work! Students could add words to the petals that need to be coloured according to the vowel sound. Let students swap with a partner to complete each other’s tasks.

Support students who need help understanding the concepts by completing the activity as a part of an adult-supported, small-group session. Look at each word in turn, say the word aloud and support the students in identifying the long or short vowel sounds.
