An Angles PowerPoint for Year 3

In their simplest form, angles are merely measures of turn. Angles are formed by the rotation or turn between two rays about a point called a vertex. A ray of an angle, just like a person or object, can turn either clockwise or anti-clockwise, and can rotate on its vertex from a tiny 1 degree to a full 360 degrees!

This 17-slide teaching presentation has been designed by our experienced team of teachers to help you teach your students about angles as measures of a turn in a circle. This resource has been created specifically with Year 3 students in mind, with descriptions given in clear, age-appropriate language and text accompanied by visuals and labelled diagrams.

This angles as measures of a turn teaching presentation addresses the following content aligned with the Australian Curriculum:

• Turning left or right
• Angles and direction
• A full turn
• A quarter turn
• A right angle
• A half turn
• A three-quarter turn

As any experienced teacher will know, it is vital to include interactive elements in any PowerPoint presentation to keep students engaged and to encourage active participation in the lesson. That’s why we’ve included multiple student-centred slides throughout the presentation to keep your students on their toes! Students are asked to apply their knowledge of turns by answering a direction-based question based on the image provided.

For example:

The bee is facing the yellow flower. What colour flower will the bee be facing if it makes a three-quarter turn anti-clockwise?

If you’re an Office Suite user, you can download this presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint format. If you prefer Google Suite, just use the dropdown menu to select the Google Slides version of this resource. In both cases, be sure to operate the presentation in Slideshow mode, as the presentation does contain some simple animations.

Additional Angles Activities

Teaching presentations are a fabulous springboard to lurch your students into further learning on the topic at hand. Once your students have the essential knowledge under their belts, you’ll want them to put this learning into practice! Here are some simple games and additional activities you can use for this very purpose.

1. Stand and Turn – Students stand up to play this game. The teacher calls out directions based on the content presented in the PowerPoint, e.g. ‘Turn clockwise one quarter turn. Turn anticlockwise two quarter turns. Turn 360 degrees clockwise.’ This game can be made a little more challenging by eliminating the last student to complete each instruction.
2. Turn the Object – This is an adaptation of the previous activity. Students draw an image (character or object) and include a pivot point (vertex) somewhere on the image. They then cut out their picture. As the teacher calls out instructions, the students turn their image around the pivot point. When the directions are complete, they draw the final position of your picture.
3. Follow the Directions – Have students write a set of directions using the language used in the presentation from a specific start point. Read the directions to a partner, then see if they end up in the correct location!
