Whole Number Operations – Math Mats

Strengthen computation skills with these math mats when reviewing how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers.

Looking for a 5th Grade Math Review?

Are you looking for a different type of math worksheet for your fifth graders? Perhaps you have just finished your unit on whole number operations, or maybe you are reviewing for an end-of-year assessment. Once your students have learned about how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, this would be a great time to introduce Teach Starter’s math mats to your students! This set of 3 math mats will keep your students engaged while practicing those important computation skills with decimals.

With this set of math mats, students are expected to:

• Multiply and Divide by single-digit numbers
• Multiply and divide by double-digit numbers
• Locate approximate positions of where a number falls on a number line
• Skip count by given numbers and find common multiples
• Identify prime and composite numbers
• And more!

Students can be given different mats, so they don’t have the same mat as the student sitting next to them. If students have time, they can complete multiple mats and color as many of the details as they would like. These math mats make a great activity after a test, as morning work after a unit is complete, or as an enrichment for early finishers. When finished, these can also be displayed on a bulletin board in the classroom.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:

For students needing a challenge, allow them to complete multiple mats or make their own mat about whole numbers using a large sheet of construction paper.

Allow students to work with a partner, use notes and completed examples, or use a calculator as needed.

Use the dropdown icon on the Download button to choose between the PDF or editable Google Slides version of this resource.

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.

Turn this teaching resource into a sustainable activity by printing on cardstock and slipping it into a dry-erase sleeve. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, then erase and reuse them.
