Recognize Fraction Models

Have your students been working on representing fractions with fraction circles, bar models, and number lines? There are so many different ways to represent a fraction, it is important that students have ample practice with different visual representations. Teach Starter has created a fun teacher-led activity that will help your students make connections between different models for the same fraction.

To complete this activity, the teacher selects 4 cards to lay down in front of students, making sure 3 of them all represent the same fraction. Students then decide which fraction card doesn’t belong. Teachers can use the sample combination chart to help them decide which cards to lay down.

Through this activity, students will practice recognizing different fraction models for the same value.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your math lessons.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Only place three cards (eliminate the number line cards) on the table and decide which one doesn’t belong.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

Have students create their own fraction models and come up with sample problems. After deciding which fraction doesn’t belong, have students compare the two fractions.
