No-Prep Needed – Printable Activities with Synonyms

What are synonyms? Why do we need them? And better yet, why do we need to teach them to second graders? Here’s a quick rundown of the facts on synonyms.

Synonyms are words that have the same or similar meanings. They are important in reading and writing because they help to expand vocabulary, improve communication, and make writing more varied and interesting. Using synonyms also helps avoid repetition and makes writing sound more sophisticated.

Teaching Synonyms Just Got Easier – Printable Synonym Worksheets

The set of worksheets for second and third-graders (maybe even fourth) to practice identifying and using synonyms in context includes the following activities:

  • Sentence Substitution: Students read a sentence, then determine a synonym for a given word.
  • Synonym Swap:  Students use a word bank to complete a sentence using the correct word for the context. Then they will determine a synonym for the word used.
  • Sentence Writing: Students complete sentences using synonyms for a word shown in an image
  • Synonym Exit Ticket:  Students will identify a synonym for a given word, then write a sentence using that word. We’ve included six exit tickets that are perfect for informal assessments.

Each worksheet includes a set of easy-to-understand instructions and multiple opportunities for students to practice using synonyms.
