• Sojourner Truth was born Isabella Baumfree in 1797 in New York.

• She had eleven children, but only four survived.

• She was a slave for 30 years before escaping and earning her freedom.

• Sojourner Truth was one of the most famous abolitionists in American history. She gave speeches all over the country about slavery and equality and even traveled as far as England to talk about it!

•  In 1850, Truth gave a speech at an abolitionist convention in Akron, Ohio. She said, “Ain’t I a woman? Look at me!” This is often cited as the beginning of feminism in America.
• She fought for abolition and women’s rights, including equal pay for equal work, equal education opportunities for women, and an end to slavery.
