5th Grade Fractions Activity

Are you looking for an engaging math enrichment task for your fifth graders? Perhaps you have just finished your unit on fraction operations, or maybe you are reviewing for an end-of-year assessment. Once your students have learned about how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions, this would be a great time to introduce Teach Starter’s math mats to your students! This set of 3 math mats will keep your students engaged while practicing those important computation skills with fractions.

Students can be given different mats, so they don’t have a matching mat as their neighbor. Students can complete multiple mats if they have time, coloring all of the details as much as they would like. This would be a great activity after a test, as morning work after a unit is complete, or as an enrichment for early finishers. They would also make a great bulletin board display in the classroom when students are done.

With these math mats, students will practice the following:

  • adding fractions with unlike denominators
  • subtracting fractions with unlike denominators
  • multiplying a fraction by a whole number
  • dividing a unit fraction by a whole number
  • finding equivalent fractions
  • and more!
