What are Bond Numbers? Let’s Review…

A number bond is a pictorial representation of the connection between numbers, commonly used in early math instruction. It consists of a circle or rectangle with two or more parts (portrayed as smaller circles or rectangles) that add to the whole.

For example, a number bond for the number 6 may show two parts: 2 and 4, with a circle around them representing the whole of 6. The number bond shows that 2 and 4 are parts of 6 and make up the whole.

Number bonds are a valuable strategy for subtraction because they help students understand the association between numbers and how subtraction operates. Learners can see how much remains after subtracting a specific amount by splitting a number into its components.
