Multiplying and Dividing with Decimals

Are your students learning how to represent decimal multiplication and division with models? Whether it is a number line, bar model, or 10×10 grid, models help students conceptualize the skill that they are working on. Teach Starter has created a resource for you to use with your students when practicing how to multiply and divide decimals.

There are 12 numerical expression cards, each with a matching solution card and model card. Students solve the expressions, analyze the models to determine matches, and record the card numbers on the student recording sheet.

The goal of this activity is to practice representing and solving one-step equations involving multiplication and division with whole numbers and decimals.

🆘 Support Struggling Students

For students needing support, remove a few sets to allow for fewer matches to manage. Allow the use of a calculator, completed examples, and notes. Work one-on-one or with a peer tutor. Have students check with the teacher before recording a match.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

Ask students needing a challenge to make a second model of another type for each numerical expression. For example, if a number line is shown, the students could draw an area model, a strip diagram, or another model of their choosing.

Print on cardstock for added durability and longevity. Place all pieces in a folder or large envelope for easy access. 

Sustainability Tip: Print a few recording sheets on cardstock and slip them into dry-erase sleeves. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, then erase and reuse them.
