Besides the morning cup of coffee that gives us our sunny disposition, most of the time we don’t question what makes up the materials that we come in contact with.

But if you were to break down that cup of coffee by its chemistry, you’d think about how the beans combine with the water, and how the milk and sugar blend with it to create a new liquid.

And when you take all that into account, you can appreciate that your morning cup of coffee is more than just fuel for the day—it’s science!

In this teaching presentation, your students will explore the properties of mixtures and solutions and examples of each. By the end, they will be able to compare and contrast each and define the elements that contribute to their characteristics.

Ask students to write questions on a separate sheet of paper as the resource is presented. Then put students into groups of 3 or 4 to help each other answer their questions.

🧑‍🏫 Be the Teacher

As a post-lesson activity, ask students what they would put on a quiz if they were the teacher. Challenge students to write their own 5-question quiz using the information in the presentation. Then have them trade papers with another student to take the quiz.
