With this teaching presentation, students will be able to compare and contrast a variety of mixtures, including solutions.

Besides the morning cup of coffee that gives us our sunny disposition, most of the time we don’t question what makes up the materials that we come in contact with.

But if you were to break down that cup of coffee by its chemistry, you’d think about how the beans combine with the water, and how the milk and sugar blend with it to create a new liquid.

And when you take all that into account, you can appreciate that your morning cup of coffee is more than just fuel for the day—it’s science!

In this teaching presentation, your students will explore the properties of mixtures and solutions and examples of each. By the end, they will be able to compare and contrast each and define the elements that contribute to their characteristics.

Looking at Mixture Versus Solution Examples with Your Students

Through this science presentation, your students will learn to define mixtures and solutions based on their properties and discover what makes them similar and what makes them different. Looking at examples of each, students will learn the key terms covered in the lesson, including:

  • Mixture
  • Solution
  • Solute
  • Solvent
  • Component

This teaching presentation makes a great resource for whole group instruction. Students can follow along on their own devices, or in the classroom using your smartboard or other projection devices.

We’ve also built-in checkpoint activities you’ll use to assess your students’ comprehension of the content while you’re teaching the lesson.

More Ways to Apply This Mixture Versus Solution Lesson

Students can use this presentation as a reference when working on any activity or classwork that has to do with mixtures and solutions.

Take this presentation even further with more activities to solidify learning about mixtures and solutions.

🧠 Pre-Lesson Activity

Students can be assigned this presentation as independent reading, either at home or prior to starting the lesson together as a group. Ask students to write notes about what they learned before starting your lesson.

🗣️ Turn & Talk

Ask students to write questions on a separate sheet of paper as the resource is presented. Then put students into groups of 3 or 4 to help each other answer their questions.

🧑‍🏫 Be the Teacher

As a post-lesson activity, ask students what they would put on a quiz if they were the teacher. Challenge students to write their own 5-question quiz using the information in the presentation. Then have them trade papers with another student to take the quiz.

Preparing This Resource for Your Students
