Start Your Year off “Write” with a Back to School Writing Activity

The first day of school is a great time for students to reflect on their upcoming goals for the year. This template will get your students “looking” forward to the year and excited about what is to come.

This template has four different questions that students can respond to:

  • What are some things you are looking forward to this school year?
  • What activities are you looking forward to this year?
  • What are you looking forward to learning in math?
  • What are you looking forward to learning in ELA?

Through this activity, students will put their writing skills to practice by responding to prompts about the upcoming school year.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your back-to-school lessons.

In addition to individual student work time, use this writing activity to enhance learning through guided writing groups, whole class lessons, or remote learning assignments.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Help students who need help understanding the concepts by limiting the number of questions they respond to. Teachers can choose 1, 2, or 3 questions for the students to reflect upon.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

For fast finishers, encourage students to draw a picture to accompany each reflection.
