Long Division Word Problems
Long division is a method for dividing one large number (the dividend) by another number (the divisor) to find the quotient. When the divisor is a multi-digit number, the process of long division becomes a bit more involved than when the divisor is a single-digit number. Here are the steps to perform long division with a multi-digit divisor:
- Write the dividend, with the leftmost digit as the first digit of the quotient.
- Divide the first digit of the quotient by the divisor. The result will be a whole number, and the remainder will be a whole number less than the divisor. Write the quotient in the first slot above the dividend and the remainder below the dividend.
- Multiply the divisor by the quotient, and write the product under the dividend.
- Subtract the product from the dividend. The result is the new dividend for the next step.
- Bring down the next digit of the dividend to the right of the remainder. Repeat steps 2-5 until you’ve divided the entire dividend and can write the final quotient.

🆘 Support Struggling Students
For students who need additional support, provide them with a multiplication chart to help with basic facts. Additionally, invite students to reference anchor charts and posters to help students recall the steps of long division.
➕ Challenge Fast Finishers
If there are students who need a bit of a challenge, ask them to give a written response on why they reasoned their answers with the problems that did not divide out evenly.
🛴 Scoot Activity
Place the cards around the room in numerical order and give each student a recording sheet. Assign students or pairs to a starting point card. Give students time to review the card and record their answer in the corresponding space on their paper. Students will rotate to the next card when you say, “SCOOT!” Continue in this manner until students return to their starting point.
👋 Exit Ticket
Use these cards as a formative assessment after your lesson. Pick a random assortment of cards and project them on the board for the whole class to see. Students can record their answers on a sheet of paper, sticky note, or their notebook.

Sustainability Tip: Print a few recording sheets on cardstock and slip them into dry-erase sleeves. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, then erase and reuse them.
