A set of 14 task cards for upper elementary students to use after reading a fiction text.
Use these classroom task cards to help students recognize and analyze literary elements found in a literary text.
The set contains 14 cards, in seven color-coded categories, exploring:
setting
character
plot
language devices
illustrations
text structure
vocabulary.
You may like to print the cards on cardstock and store them on a binder ring for your students to choose from. These activities can be completed in a reading center after a read aloud or listening to a book on tape, or as a whole class activity.

Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 4 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.
Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact).
Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 5 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.
Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
Describe how the author's use of imagery, literal
and figurative language such as simile and metaphor, and sound devices such as
alliteration and assonance achieves specific purposes;
