Looking for Lesson Ideas on Equal and Unequal Parts?

From a very early age, students start to analyze shapes to determine if there are equal or unequal parts. This typically begins with recognizing halves and then moves to fourths and eighths.

Teach Starter has created a fun fractions coloring sheet as a great introduction to fractions. This also could be used as an introduction to symmetry.  This worksheet consists of a variety of shapes, all of which have been split into two parts. Students must differentiate between those shapes that have been split into equal halves and those that have not.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:

If students are looking for an additional challenge, encourage them to create a picture with items split in half equally and unequally. They can trade with a classmate and encourage them to color in the pieces that show 2 equal parts.

For students who are still learning the concept of a half, consider using the lower-level version of this resource to practice coloring in half. With this version, all of the shapes show equal parts. Students will be exposed to many different figures and practice recognizing equal parts. Additionally, encourage students to work with fraction circles, fraction bars, etc., to show how a whole can be broken up into two equal pieces of the same size.
