What is International Women’s Day?

The United Nations officially recognized International Women’s Day in 1975, and it’s been honored worldwide ever since. But why do we set this day aside every March, and what can our kids learn from it?

The idea of celebrating International Women’s Day originated in the early 20th century, during a time of great social and political upheaval, as women worldwide were demanding better working conditions, suffrage, and other rights. The first International Women’s Day was observed in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, and it has since become a global celebration.

Today, International Women’s Day is recognized as an official holiday in many countries, and it is celebrated with rallies, marches, and other events that promote women’s rights and gender equality. It serves as a reminder that although women have made significant progress in many areas, much work must be done to achieve full gender equality.

Explore the history and importance of setting aside a day to talk about the impact of women on society and ways to ensure gender quality in your classroom. It’s also an excellent opportunity to learn about influential women in our history and how they’ve overcome the odds and made significant contributions to our society!
