Independence Day… 4th of July… Usually we think of this holiday as one filled with fireworks, barbeques, and spending time with our friends and family. As your students are learning about the importance of holidays, the true meaning of Independence Day should not be forgotten.  

With this resource, students will learn that this special day is a recognized national holiday, when it is celebrated, why it is celebrated, and common activities associated with Independence Day. 

Through this activity, students will understand that holidays are celebrations of special events. Students will be able to explain the importance of Independence Day and why it is celebrated.

In addition to individual student work time, use this holiday-themed mini-book to enhance learning through guided social studies groups, whole class lessons, or remote learning assignments. 

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts: 

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Help students who need support understanding the concepts by completing the book in a 1-on-1 environment or with a small group. Additionally, students can reference previous classwork, posters, or anchor charts when completing this activity.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

For students who are fast finishers, encourage students to draw a picture of themselves celebrating Independence Day on the back of their mini-book.
