Helen Keller Fun Facts for Kids – Reading Passage Task

Helen Keller’s life is a great example of the power of perseverance and determination. She had to overcome many obstacles, including being born blind and deaf. Despite these challenges, Helen was able to learn how to communicate with others through sign language. Her contributions to the deaf/blind community in the United States changed history, thereby earning her a place as an American hero.

Students will read about Helen Keller’s life and work in this passage. Following the reading, there are three additional worksheets that provide additional skill practice in the following areas.

  • Recalling key facts and details, using text evidence
  • Identifying character traits and using evidence to support conclusions
  • Sequencing details in chronological order

Students will learn about Helen Keller’s contributions to the United States and people with disabilities through social studies worksheets.

An answer key is included with this resource for easy grading. 

Ways to Use This Printable Helen Keller Worksheet Pack

Use this comprehension activity to build a week or more of your Citizenship or Historical Figure lesson plans. You could pair this passage with many activities, including a Helen Keller wanted poster or an in-class biography project on Helen Keller.

In addition to being an inspiring historical figure to study during Women’s History Month, use this worksheet as a: 

Sustainability Tips: Print on cardstock and slip the pages into dry-erase sleeves. Students can record their answers with a dry-erase marker, then erase and reuse them. You can also project the worksheet and work through it as a class, having students record their answers in their notebooks.
