Foundations of Reading –  Features of Print Interactive

Are you looking for resources to teach those beginning of year Features of Print concepts? You’re in the right place!  This resource is designed for the primary reader, a reader who is experiencing the wonders of print for the first time.

Learners will be able to utilize this interactive activity to explore, sort, and identify the different features that they will come across in printed materials.  Students will click, drag, and drop to interact with concepts, including

  • Using capital letters to begin sentences
  • Placing spaces between words in sentences
  • Placing end punctuation on sentences
  • Identifying correct sentence examples and non-examples.
  • Differentiating between letters, numbers, words, and punctuation marks

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts: 

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Help students who need help understanding the concepts by

  • Completing the activity in a one-to-one or small group session.
  • Pair students with a partner to complete the activity.
  • Provide an example of each print feature and allow students to access an anchor chart or visual reminder of print features during the exercise.
  • Complete the activities as a whole-group lesson and have students interact with the slides by coming to the board to drag and drop objects.
