Work with Fraction Bars and Identify Fractions on a Number Line

Are your students in need of some hands-on fractions practice? Teach Starter has created a printable activity to help your students understand how unit fractions are pieced together to create a whole.

With this differentiated worksheet, students will work to create a whole by creating a fraction bar with cut-apart pieces. Students must first color the rectangles according to the color guide, cut them out, and then place them next to each other to create a whole. Additionally, students will have a separate worksheet to practice identifying fractions on a number line.

This resource’s lower-level version works with fractions with a denominator of 2, 3, 4, or 5. The higher-level version incorporates smaller fractional pieces and those with denominators of 6, 8, 10, and 12.

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:

If students need a challenge, have them complete the two-star version of the worksheet. Additionally, work with students to use their fraction bars to determine pairs of equivalent fractions.

Encourage students who need additional support to complete the one-star version of this resource. Additionally, consider giving them hands-on fraction bars to manipulate and practice creating a whole.
