This worksheet is best used as independent practice as part of your punctuation and grammar lesson to review the rules for capitalizing the first word of a sentence, the personal pronoun I, and the names of people. 

It can also be used as a pre-lesson knowledge assessment to see what students already know. 

In addition to individual student work time, this capital letter worksheet can be used as an activity for your:

• Whole-class (via smartboard)

Capital Letters Worksheet Scaffolding and Extension Tips 

Challenge fast finishers to write 3-5 sentences of their own showing proper usage of capitalization at the beginning of a sentence, personal pronoun I, and names of people.

If you have students struggling with the concepts, cluster the sentences into groups of two and have students color code what they are looking for: green for the beginning of a sentence, blue for the personal pronoun I, and orange for names of people. Once they have color-coded two sentences correctly and understand the concept, move on to two more sentences.

Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheets for students to complete.  

Please also review our tips for how to turn this classroom resource into a sustainable activity: 

• Print a few copies on cardstock and slip them into dry-erase sleeves. Students can rewrite the sentences with a dry-erase marker, then erase and reuse them. 
• Print this 2-page worksheet double-sided to cut down on paper.
• Project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks.
