Challenge Students to Finish the Drawing

This fun worksheet for elementary school gives kids a chance to use their imaginations and problem-solving skills to finish a drawing that’s halfway done for them. With the shape of half of a robot presented to them, students have to think critically about the lines they draw next to create an image that makes sense.

What Is a Finish the Drawing Activity?

If you haven’t used “finish the drawing” in your classroom before, you may be curious about what it is and how it works. Have no fear, our teacher team is here with a quick primer!

A “finish the drawing” activity is a creative exercise where a partially drawn picture is provided — like the half robot on this worksheet.

The person finishing the drawing — in this case your student — is tasked with completing the artwork by adding their own ideas and finishing the missing parts. Because the initial drawing typically includes only a portion of the image it leaves plenty of room for interpretation and personalization.

Because they allow for a wide range of interpretations and outcomes, finish the drawing activities make for great early finisher and brain break activities in a variety of classrooms!

How to Use This Activity

Have your students draw the other side of the robot and then color it.

This resource can be used in a variety of ways:

  • Use when teaching symmetry in your math classroom
  • Use as a brainstorming piece before writing a narrative text about the robot — have students include a background showing the setting for their text
  • Use as a fast finisher activity or fun brain break
