Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Are your students learning how to divide fractions? This process may seem daunting for some, but as long as you understand the steps, it can be fun for some students to do! When dividing fractions, there are a few steps you must take.

  1. Find the reciprocal (or the inverse) of the second number in the problem.
  2. Multiply the numerators.
  3. Multiply the denominators.
  4. Simplify the fraction if needed.

If you are looking for additional computation practice for your students, Teach Starter has a set of differentiated worksheets ready for you to use in your classroom.

This download includes three different worksheets to use with your students during your fractional operations unit. Each version consists of 20 questions where students will solve division problems with fractions. The stars in the upper right-hand corner signify the difficulty of each version.

⭐: The problems on this worksheet are limited to unit fractions. This means that the fractions used on this worksheet only include those with a 1 as the numerator.

⭐⭐: This worksheet has problems that involve dividing fractions with those that have any number as a numerator.

⭐⭐⭐: This version requires students to solve problems where they are required to divide mixed numbers.

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:

Consider using the version with three stars in the upper right-hand corner for students who need a bit of a challenge. The problems on this worksheet involve not only dividing fractions but dividing mixed numbers as well.

If there are students who need additional assistance, consider using the version with one star in the upper right-hand corner. This version uses unit fractions and whole numbers.
