How to Use a Multiplication Chart

After students understand the concept of multiplication by means of equal groups, arrays and skip counting, they may be ready to look at a multiplication chart. If this is your student’s first time using this math tool, have no fear! Let’s break down how to explain the process of using a multiplication chart.

In order to use a multiplication chart to find the product of a multiplication problem, here are some steps for students to follow:

  • Determine the factors of the problem. Simply put, these are the numbers you are multiplying together!
  • Look at the left-hand side of the multiplication chart and find the first factor.
  • Look at the numbers listed across the top of the multiplication chart and find the second factor.
  • Using your fingers, move along the row that begins with the first factor until you reach the column that starts with the second factor. The box where these two numbers meet is the product!
