  1. Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 4, 1961.
  2. His father was from Kenya, and his mother was from Kansas.
  3. He grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia.
  4. He went to Harvard Law School, where he became the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review.
  5. He worked as a civil rights attorney and community organizer before entering politics as a community organizer in Chicago’s South Side neighborhood of Roseland (where he met Michelle Robinson).
  6. In 1992, he became the first African American elected to the Illinois Senate; in 1996, he won a seat in Congress representing Illinois’ 1st District, which includes much of Chicago’s South Side neighborhoods, including Roseland and Bronzeville

  • Have students write their short biography of Obama, using the information from the book as a guide.
