Numbers in American Sign Language

If you’re adding American Sign Language into your instruction this school year, the numbers 0 through 10 are a great place to start, and this printable poster will help the lessons stick!

Your students are likely already familiar with using their hands to represent numbers — from holding up one finger to represent the number 1 to raising both hands to show the number 10. But many of the numbers in American Sign Language look a little bit different than they’re used to!

For example:

  • 6 — In ASL, this is represented as a “thumbs-up” or “OK” handshape.
  • 7 — The sign for 7 is similar to an imaginary gun made with the hand. The index and middle fingers are extended, and the thumb is bent.
  • 8 — When making an 8 in American Sign Language, students don’t need to put up two hands and eight fingers. Instead, all fingers are extended on one hand, and the thumb is tucked in.
  • 9 — The sign for 9 includes an extended thumb. The other fingers are bent.
