Identify the adjective in the sentence through this set of 20 task cards.

Adjectives are the paint an author uses to create vivid pictures through their text. 🎨

Their descriptions offer details that transport the audience to a time or place, a feeling or memory, a sensation or emotion.

And when it comes to being the writer, adjectives are the parts of speech most open for interpretation, creating plenty of opportunities for creative expression.

Practice Identifying Descriptive Words With This Adjectives Activity

This activity shows that students can identify adjectives in text.

Students will read each card and determine the adjective in the sentence, writing it on the recording sheet provided.

An answer key is included with your download for students to self-check their work.

Scaffolding + Extension Tips

Challenge students who already understand the concept to write 5 sentences of their own using adjectives on the back of their answer sheet.

Support students who need help using choral response in your small group. Read the sentences on each task card aloud to students and have them call out the adjectives as they hear them.

Turn This Adjectives Activity Into More Ways To Practice

Download this resource for an additional fast finisher activity in your literacy center.

We also suggest using it with your guided writing group and whole class for scoot activities, lesson reviews, and other formative assessments, like these:

đź›´ Scoot Activity

Place the playing cards around the room in numerical order and give each student a recording sheet. Assign each student a number to start. Give students an appropriate amount of time to identify the adjective and write it in the corresponding space on their recording sheet. When you say, “SCOOT,” students will rotate to the next card. Continue in this manner until students have made it through all of the cards.

đź”” Bell Ringer Activity

Leave the cards in a pile, and instruct students to grab one as soon as they enter the classroom. Provide them with their own sticky note so that they can turn in their answer as a formative assessment—use our Sticky Note Printing Template for easy prep!

🧠 Keyword Brain Buster

As a small group or full class, challenge your students to think of as many additional adjectives as they can in 30 seconds for each card. When the time is up, you can call on students to give you some examples, and even let them compare their answers to see if there are any matching words amongst classmates.

Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students

Print on cardstock for added durability and longevity. Place all pieces in a folder or large envelope for easy access.

Make this activity a sustainable center resource by printing a few recording sheets on cardstock and slipping them into dry-erase sleeves. Students can use a dry-erase marker to fill in their answers, then erase and reuse!

TIP: Keep task cards from getting lost by punching a hole in the corner of each and placing them on a binder ring.
