Practice Adding within 10

Use this resource in your math center, as a small group activity, or a whole class exercise (see below) to practice adding single-digit numbers

Slip cards into dry-erase sleeves for durability. Provide students with manipulatives for the Make It section and dry-erase markers for the Solve It section.

Scaffolding and Extension Tips + More Addition Activities

Challenge students who already understand the concept to write addition sentences with 1- and 2-digit numbers.

For your 2nd grade students, why not use just the mat and base-10 blocks and practice modeling 2-digit numbers. This will allow students to visually see the regrouping that takes place!

Support students who need help understanding the concepts by using manipulatives such as connecting cube or counters, or using a number line to make jumps.

Use this resource as independent practice for fast finishers, and full-class learning opportunities like scoot activities, lesson reviews, formative assessments, and more.

Knock Off

Have your students stand up and make a line across the room. Project an addition problem card on the screen and use our Random Name Picker widget to draw a student’s name to answer. If the student correctly solves it, they tap the person on their left or right to send them back to their seat. If the student answers the card incorrectly, they must sit out. Play continues until only 1 student is standing.

Jump in the Line

Have students stand up and provide each with an addition problem card. Challenge them to solve it, and then silently put themselves in numerical order based on their answers.

Show Me!

Give each student a mini dry-erase board and a dry-erase marker. Project an addition problem card on the screen and have your students write the solution on their board. When everyone has written down their answer, say, “Show Me.” Students will flip their boards, allowing you to see who needs extra support.
