# Addition Strategy - Decompose, Then Make 10 Worksheet

Build addition strategies using digits 1-10 with this two-page decomposing numbers worksheet.

This worksheet is best used as independent practice as part of your decomposing numbers addition lesson.

On each page, students will break down an addition sentence to show they understand how to find alternative digits that add up to the sum of ten.

## Decomposing Numbers Worksheet Scaffolding and Extension Tips

In addition to individual student work time, this decomposing addition worksheet can be used as an activity for your:

Got fast finishers? Challenge students who have a grasp on the concept by providing them with larger numbers to practice the same method. Alternately, students who understand this concept might demonstrate their thinking by explaining how to solve 1-2 of these problems to the class.

Support struggling students by using smaller numbers or counters to help them better understand and visualize the numbers. Aids like posters, desk plates, and anchor charts are also helpful reference tools for students working with operations. You might also use this worksheet as an intervention assignment or with your guided math group.

## A Variety of Ways to Prepare This Resource

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.

To save paper, we suggest printing this 2-page worksheet double-sided.

You can also turn this teaching resource into a sustainable activity! Print a few copies on cardstock and slip them into dry-erase sleeves. Students can record their answers with a dry-erase marker, then erase and reuse.

Additionally, project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their math notebooks.
