Absolute Value Equations

Do your students have a good understanding of absolute value and opposites? If so, they may be ready to work on solving equations with absolute value. While some equations may look a bit tricky at first, once you understand the concept of absolute value, working with these values in an equation format might not be so challenging!

With this math worksheet, students will practice finding the absolute value of whole numbers, decimals, and mixed numbers. Additionally, students will solve absolute equations involving multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. The worksheet has a total of 37 questions to solve for. Once students have answered the questions, they are to use the key to color the picture.

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

In addition to independent student work time, use this worksheet as an activity for:

For students who need a bit of a challenge, consider using the editable version to modify the questions to have more complex values while keeping the same answers. This way, the color page will not have to be altered.

If there are students who need additional support, consider completing this activity in a small group or a 1-on-1 setting. Additionally, students can refer to previous assignments, posters, or anchor charts as a visual reminder during this activity. There also is a simpler color-by-number activity where students focus only on finding absolute values and the opposite of a number.
